What is your relationship to GISWatch?
María was born in Mexico City and currently lives in Oaxaca. As a member of Redes A.C she collaborates with research and participatory methodologies in processes of design and development of community networks to access, share and preserve local content. She coordinates the train-the-trainer methodological design of Colmena, an open-source newsroom for community media with DW Akademie. As the Project Writer of the “Indigenous and
minority language community needs for secure technologies: a participatory research project”, she collaborates with Rising Voices co-writing 18 journalistic articles with each of the Indigenous researchers and linguistic digital activists from communities in Asia, Africa and Latin America involved in the project.
She holds an M.A. in Communication and Technology at the University of Alberta and a B.A in Social Anthropology from Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana - Iztapalapa. As a Graduate Student, she collaborated with
DigitalNWT, a train-the-trainer program in community networks across the Northwest Territories, Canada. Maria is a member of Research Center on Technology and Community Knowledge (CITSAC) and Tierra Común,and has
published several journalistic articles about community media and technological autonomy
